Originally, a notepad referred to a small booklet used to record various matters. Before the invention of writing, humans often used knotted ropes to keep track of numbers or events, creating specific patterns that conveyed information. Archaeological evidence, such as reticulated designs and rope-like motifs found on pottery—and even pottery net pendants—reveals that knotting as a method of recording (or counting) was one of the widely adopted techniques among primitive peoples.
